Manaolana | Makana’s helpful hints: The handmaid of the Lord

05/23/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

I was unsure of what to write about and this time God gave guidance through my wife, Stephanie.

Most would agree that it is natural for a man to take advice from his wife, but still many of us struggle with guidance from those closest to us, even when we know it will lead in the right direction. Why? Pride, fear, knowing it won’t be easy. Whatever the reason, the decision always boils down to trust.

We may know God has a great plan for us, but if we don’t completely trust him, then that plan may never become reality. The saints show us that trust in God is often difficult, but the reward is always eternal. This month we look to Mary, who St. John Paul II described as “the human being who has responded better than any other to God’s call.”

This young un-wed girl, who risked death to accept Gabriel’s message of God’s plan for her, showed us complete trust by her simple response, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Have a discussion around this question, “In what area of my life do I need to be more trusting?”
