Catholic Charities Hawaii has named its Ulu Center, a meeting and counseling facility on its upper Makiki campus, after one of Hawaii’s outstanding community advocates and benefactors.
In a May 18 ceremony at the Clarence T.C. Ching Campus, the building was renamed the Peter P.J. Ng Ulu Center.
As principal in Ng & Niebling LLC, Ng has provided estate planning services to Hawaii residents for nearly 50 years. He has served for years as a leader for various organizations including the Marianist Center of Hawaii, the Maryknoll School board, Palolo Chinese Home, Chaminade University Educational Foundation, and Star of the Sea Church Finance Council.
A trustee and treasurer for the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, Ng has also been a leading advocate for generous grants to many local organizations, including Catholic Charities Hawaii.
“Peter has lived a life that exemplifies our organization’s four core values, which are a commitment to excellence, compassion, dignity of each person and social justice,” said Catholic Charities president and CEO Jerry Rauckhorst. “We’re tremendously honored to be able to recognize his incredible contributions in this way.”
Built in 2011, the 1,766-square-foot Ulu Center serves as a gathering place and counseling site for individuals and families, and a venue for board, staff and community meetings. Ulu is the Hawaiian word for breadfruit, a Polynesian food staple whose image is part of Catholic Charities logo.
Ng has been recognized and honored by numerous organizations including Maryknoll School, Saint Louis School and Saint Francis School. He is a graduate of Saint Louis School, Chaminade University and the University of California Hastings College of Law. Ng was admitted to the Hawaii State Bar in 1964.
“Peter’s passion for serving others is inspiring,” Rauckhorst said. “We hope that the renaming of the Ulu Center shows Peter, in some small way, just how thankful we are for his outstanding service over the years.”
