Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet Marian Muehlbauer, who served 32 years in Hawaii, is celebrating her 60th anniversary in religious life this year at the St. Joseph Provincial House in St. Louis, Mo.
Born in Green Bay, Wis., and baptized Janet Theresa, Sister Marian entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1953 and was received into the novitiate in 1954. She has served 50 years in education beginning as a primary grade school teacher in Missouri and Georgia.
In 1967 she was assigned to Honolulu, teaching first at Holy Trinity School and then at St. Theresa School. From 1970 to 1982, Sister Marian taught at St. Joseph School in Waipahu. Then, after two more years at St. Theresa, she returned to the mainland in 1984.
She received a bachelor’s degree in history from the Fontbonne College in 1963 and a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Hawaii in 1970.
Sister Marian taught for nearly 10 years in Kansas City, Mo., before returning to Honolulu to teach 15 more years at St. Theresa. While in Hawaii, she also taught religion classes to the public school children, coached students for the speech competitions, and organized the speech club at St. Theresa School. With the help of lay teachers, she led the students in monthly meetings to implement the National Catholic Education Association’s Vision and Value program.
A highlight of her time in Hawaii was a visit to Kalaupapa, Molokai, where St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope ministered to Hansen’s disease patients.
Since her return to St. Louis in 2008, Sister Marian has served her Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet community as a hospitality associate for the St. Joseph Provincial House and as a volunteer at the Carondelet Literacy Center.
Sister Marian is an avid Packer fan and looks forward to next season when Aaron Rodgers will be completely healed and ready for the challenge of the NFL.
