Free laulau a tradition at annual Holy Ghost Feast in Kula, Maui

05/09/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

A free laulau meal will be served to everyone who comes out to the Kula Catholic Community’s annual Holy Ghost Feast, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday, June 7, and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, June 8, at Holy Ghost Mission, the historic octagonal church at 4300 Lower Kula Road in Waiakoa.

The meal comes with all the rest the annual feast offers: a livestock auction, a live auction, entertainment, games, a bouncing castle for children, baked goods, a farmers’ market, jams and jellies, flowers and plants, crafts and plenty of ono food.

The free meal, which will be served in shifts starting at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, is a tradition that recalls Queen Isabel’s (St. Elizabeth) piety and devotion to her people in 14th century Portugal.

The shape of the Kula church, built by the Portuguese who settled there in the 19th century, is said to represent the eight-sided crown of the queen.

Mass will be celebrated June 7 at 5 p.m. and June 8 at 9:30 a.m., each followed by a procession led by the Holy Ghost Feast Queen.

The live auction begins at 6 p.m. Saturday and continues at 11 a.m. Sunday. Auction items include golf, hotel stays, restaurants, boat excursions, health and beauty gift certificates, home-made baked goods and more.

The livestock auction is 2:30 p.m., Sunday.

The Holy Ghost Feast, held every Pentecost weekend, is the main fundraiser for the parish, which includes Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Keokea and St. James the Less Mission in Ulupalakua.

Parking will be available at the community center. Maui Bus “Kula Villager” stops at the Holy Ghost Church.
