The Sisters and Brothers of the Pacific and U.S. Provinces of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts are sponsoring three days of events in May celebrating the 150th anniversary of Father Damien De Veuster’s arrival in Hawaii and his ordination to the priesthood.
Father Damien came to Hawaii on March 19, 1864 and was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu two months later. His feast day is May 10.
The events are as follows:
Friday, May 9, Neal S. Blaisdell Arena
- 10 a.m.: Mass for Oahu schools with ties to the Sacred Hearts Congregation, and Damien Memorial School
- 6 p.m.: Mass for the public
- 8 p.m.: Entertainment featuring Catholic comedienne Judy McDonald, Tom Booth & Band
Saturday, May 10, Hawaii State Capitol
- 11 a.m.: Rally and prayer service with “Rappin’ Rosary” Joe Melendrez
Monday, May 12, St. Ann’s Church and Model Schools
- 7 p.m.: Sacred Hearts Congregation benefit concert with Joe Melendrez, Judy McDonald, Tom Booth & Band. A calabash bowl will available for donations.
All events are free.
