Haas you Hurd? The Marianists got big Lenten plans for lovers of liturgical music in Hawaii, plus a workshop and lecture by the granddaughter of an American candidate for sainthood.
The Marianist Center of Hawaii is sponsoring three liturgical arts conferences on three islands featuring both David Haas, composer of such hymn hits as “Blest Are They,” “You Are Mine” and “We Have Been Told,” and Bob Hurd, whose pen produced “Taste and See,” “Unless a Grain of Wheat” and “Gather your People.”
The first event is Marianist WHILAC (West Hawaii Island Liturgy and Arts Conference), March 18-19, at Annunciation Parish in Waimea on the Big Island.
The second is Marianist VILAC (Valley Isle Liturgy and Arts Conference), March 21-22, at St. Anthony Parish in Wailuku, Maui.
The third is LILAC (Lanai Island Liturgy and Arts Concert) 6 p.m. March 23, at Sacred Hearts Parish in Lanai City.
Next month, Martha Hennessy will give two presentations on her grandmother Dorothy Day, the social justice activist whose cause for sainthood is being promoted by the Archdiocese of New York and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
- Workshop: “Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement: A Relevant Discipleship for Today,” 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 5.
- Lecture: “Dorothy Day: Faithful and Courageous Saint for Our Times,” 4 p.m., April 6. Free.
Both the workshop and lecture will be in the Mystical Rose Oratory, the campus chapel for Chaminade University and Saint Louis School.
Hennessy is herself a strong advocate for the poor and for her grandmother’s Catholic Worker Movement.
In the fall, the Marianist Center will host Marianist BILAC on Oahu, in Mystical Rose. The Nov. 6-8 event will feature David Haas, Lori True, Gary Daigle, Rory Cooney and Theresa Donohoo, just to name a few.
