50 years ago — March 13, 1964

1heraldingJames DeAguiar, freshman at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri explains the anthuriums to James Cleary, chairman of the Father-Son Night at the college and to Father S.E. Kalamaja, S.J., registrar. The flowers were sent from Hilo to Father Kalamaja by James’ parents. James is a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph’s in Hilo and he is majoring in electrical engineering.

25 years ago — March 17, 1989

Father Clarence Liu to resign as vicar general

Father Clarence M. Liu announced this week that he will be leaving the office of vicar general and other diocesan offices he holds by the end of March.

Citing “personal reasons,” Fr. Liu gave Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario a letter of resignation this past Monday. He has been vicar general, the diocese’s second highest position for nearly two years.

In the letter Fr. Liu stated, “My decision to resign, which is for personal reasons, has not been a sudden nor easy one to make. It is the fruit of a long process of prayer and discernment with family and friends.”

New Catholic Charities Hawaii program brings abstinence ed to public and private schools

Thanks to a federal grant, Catholic Charities Hawaii will bring abstinence education to public and private schools grades seventh through 12.

Called the Try Wait! Abstinence Education Program, the classes teach teens the value and wisdom of refraining from sexual relations until they are married.

Catholic Charities will receive $735,000 per year for three years under the Special Projects of Regional and National Significance (SPRANDS) Title V Programs. The program was first authorized as part of the 1996 Welfare Reform Law. …

Try Wait! hopes to serve 2,000 public and private school students and 200 parents per year.
