Manaolana | Lisa’s catechism corner: Can people be forced to believe in God?

02/28/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

YOUCAT*: No. No one may force others to believe, not even one’s own children, just as no one may be forced to be an unbeliever. A person can make the decision to believe only in complete freedom. Christians, however, are called to help other people, by word and example, to find the way to faith. [2104-2109, 2137]

As Christians, we have a duty to proclaim, both by word and through action, the Gospel message. But that doesn’t mean forcing our personal beliefs down someone’s throat. We have to do it in a loving, prudent and respectful manner.

Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have enjoined upon you” (Matt. 28: 19-20).

One of the major tenets of Catholic doctrine is that man’s response to God in faith must be free: no one can be forced to embrace the Christian faith against his or her will.
