Bishop, parish celebrates pastor’s new honor

Father Raymond Nishigaya said he should have suspected something when he saw his mother in the congregation this past Sunday at the 10 a.m. Mass at St. Stephen Church in Nuuanu where he is pastor …

It wasn’t until Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario went to the lectern to speak after the processional, Fr. Nishigaya said, that he knew what was going on. Bishop Ferrario presented Fr. Nishigaya with the Vatican document conferring upon him the title of monsignor.

The Honolulu-born priest knew it was coming eventually. Bishop Ferrario had announced his intentions in 1987 and petitioned Pope John Paul II to name Fr. Nishigaya a monsignor in recognition of his service to the diocese.

‘Civil union’ bill dies in committee

A bill that would have given same-sex couples the same rights and benefits as married couples died at the state legislature last week when the house Judiciary Committee didn’t have the quorum necessary to vote on it.

With only five of the 15-member committee present following a Feb. 19 public hearing on House Bill 1024 on “civil unions,” committee chairman Eric Hamakawa deferred a vote indefinitely. The deadline for a committee vote was Feb. 20.

The Diocese of Honolulu had opposed the bill.

“Civil union is marriage by another name,” Hawaii Catholic Conference acting director Walter Yoshimitsu testified at the hearing.
