Manaolana | Lisa’s catechism corner: What is Baptism?

01/17/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

YOUCAT*: Baptism is the way out of the kingdom of death into life, the gateway to the church, and the beginning of a lasting communion with God. [1213-1216, 1276-1278]

Most of us don’t remember our baptisms because we were babies. And, we hear a lot about baptism, especially when someone we know has a new baby, but, oftentimes, we forget what its true meaning is.

Baptism is the first of the sacraments of initiation. It is our entrance into the church and the foundation for all the other sacraments. It is through baptism that we are marked as God’s children and become members of the Catholic Church.

We can only be baptized once. Baptism washes away original sin and gives us the grace we need to resist temptation and be holy.

#BaptismChallenge: This week, live out your baptismal call by sharing your faith with friends and family.
