8 parishes on 2 islands: bishop has full Misa de Gallo schedule

12/06/2013 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Bishop Larry Silva will rise with the roosters on the eight days before Christmas to celebrate the Misa de Gallo in eight parishes on Oahu and Kauai.

The bishop in recent years has included in his schedule this novena of dawn liturgies, a popular Filipino tradition whose name translates as “Mass of the Rooster,” in reference to the early hour it is celebrated.

Here is the bishop’s schedule of Masses. Each is celebrated at 5 a.m. except for the Mass at St. Joseph, Waipahu, which is at 4:30 a.m.

Dec. 17: St. Anthony, Kalihi

Dec. 18: St. John Apostle and Evangelist, Mililani

Dec. 19: St. Joseph, Waipahu

Dec. 20: Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu

Dec. 21: Holy Cross, Kalaheo

Dec. 22: St. Theresa, Kekaha

Dec. 23: St. Catherine, Kapaa

Dec. 24: Our Lady of Good Counsel, Pearl City

Misa de Gallo, also called Simbang Gabi, originated in the Philippines as a preparation for Christmas that accommodated farmers and laborers who had to start work early in the morning. The Masses usually include breakfast afterward.
