Be not afraid
In 1936, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary lost 14 religious in Spain as that country’s civil war got under way — they were killed in a wave of religious persecution that ultimately claimed hundreds of lives. Five of the martyrs for whom sufficient documentation exists were beatified Oct. 13 in Spain along with more than 500 others who were slain.
The Sacred Hearts brothers — Fathers Teofilo Fernandez de Legaria Goni, Gonzalo Barron Nanclares, Isidro Iniguez de Ciriano Abechuco, Eladio Lopez Ramos and Mario Ros Escurra — ranged in age from 38 to 26 and were killed at different points throughout 1936. Though they all died under different circumstances, their final days were similar: Once apprehended by militiamen, the priests were not afraid to declare their status as religious. Their final words indicated they accepted their martyrdoms as God’s will. (www.ssccpicpus.com)
