“Houseless in Paradise,” an original play based on interviews with more than 60 members of Oahu’s homeless community and those trying to help them, will be presented Nov. 15-16 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Catholic Charities Hawaii community hall in upper Makiki.
Produced by Playbuilders community theatre, the drama features a cast of six professional actors and six homeless persons. Mark Tjarks, an associate professor of English at Hawaii Pacific University, shaped the play’s script by compiling real words and perspectives from those who have experienced homelessness first-hand.
Jerry Rauckhorst, president and CEO of Catholic Charities Hawaii, said the drama contains “powerful testimony that gets at the heart of community issues,” telling the stories of the homeless through “creative means.”
Suggested donation for admission is $20, but no one will be turned away for inability to pay. Reservations are recommended and can be made at www.playbuilders.org or by calling 218-0103.
The show will also be presented at Central Union Church on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 4 p.m; and at McCoy Pavillion Nov. 22-23 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 24 at 4 p.m.
