No. 4 on the “top 10 list”: “Honor your father and your mother.” I will honor my mother by speaking to her request, bereavement. The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas season can trigger warm memories for everyone, like Grandma’s stuffing, dad preparing the nativity scene, or ripping through wrapping paper. But, sometimes tough memories surface and physical absence of loved ones is felt.
Last week Friday, we celebrated All Souls’ Day, remembering all the faithful departed. It was also a time to realize that, although we miss them physically, we must rejoice spiritually and pray that, whether in heaven or on their way, their lives on earth are cherished and their souls are carried in our hearts.
I (and my mom) suggest outreach to those separated from their loved ones by distance or death. Send care packages to students on the Mainland or celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with those who cannot be with family.
Tap into other ministries and events at your parish by attending All Saints’ and All Souls Masses and invite young adults to memoralize their loved ones in parish memorials or “Books of the Dead.” Find ways to celebrate those who have passed from this life.
