YOUCAT: Evil is only apparently worth striving for, and deciding in favor of evil only apparently makes us free. Evil does not make us happy but rather deprives us of what is truly good; it chains us to something futile and in the end destroys our freedom entirely. [1730-1733, 1743-1744]
In the last issue, I talked about the freedom we are given by God — the free will to choose right or wrong. Often, we misuse our freedom and choose evil. Addiction is one example of this. Alcohol, drugs, sex or even video games appear good and pleasurable, but if we let these behaviors take over our lives, we become compulsive. It begins to interfere with our ordinary life responsibilities, such as work and relationships — including our relationship with Christ.
“For freedom, Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” —Galatians 5:1
