Left, House Speaker Elmer F. Cravalho addressed an audience of 1,500 at Maui’s Kahului Fairgrounds on Sunday, as principal speaker for the Holy Name Societies-sponsored Christ the King Rally. Speaking boldly and with firm conviction, he stressed the pressing need for Christians to stand in the forefront in the fight for Civil Rights.

25 years ago — Nov. 11, 1988

Catholics played significant role in 1988 election

Catholic issues and Catholic voters figured prominently in the 1988 presidential election won by Republican George Bush, with both parties saying before election day that they used different strategies to target Catholic voters.

Vice President Bush defeated his Democratic opponent, Michael Dukakis, by 54-46 percent of the popular vote and by 426-112 votes in the Electoral College. An ABC News exit poll of voters, however, had Dukakis ahead of Bush among Catholics by 53 percent to 46 percent.

During the final week before his election, Bush visited three Catholic colleges — the University of Notre Dame, Fairfield University in Connecticut and Immaculata College in Pennsylvania.

One step closer to sainthood

Mother Marianne’s cause for canonization took a major step forward on Oct. 24 when nine theologians of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints unanimously recommended that she receive the title “venerable,” the first of three formal church designations on the road to sainthood.

The second step is beatification. The third is canonization itself.

According to Franciscan Sister of Syracuse Mary Laurence Hanley, the Franciscan community’s director of the cause, the next step is for the congregation’s 12-member commission of cardinals and bishops to approve the theologians’ recommendation …

Sister Mary Laurence said that Mother Marianne was an extraordinary model of “sacrifice and selflessness.”
