“Providence College loves Pope Francis.”

Rolando Rivi became a seminarian at the tender age of 11 and was executed for his faith just three years later. His death at the hands of communist partisans in 1945 was deemed martyrdom earlier this year, paving the way for his beatification Oct. 5 in Modena, Italy.
Blessed Rolando was born in Italy in 1931. He donned a cassock upon entering the seminary, as all students did, and never ceased wearing it even when Catholics and his seminary came under threat from anti-faith factions. He also continued to read and serve in his parish.
He was kidnapped by communists April 10, 1945, from the woods in his hometown where he had gone to study. After three days of torture he was shot in the head and heart, and his cassock hung as a trophy outside someone’s home. (www.ncregister.com)
