Diaconate: Merging marriage, ministry and the marketplace
“Christ sent his disciples out two by two. Two by two is not a bad image of a couple in diaconate ministry,” Fr. Bart O’Leary, director of the permanent diaconate program, said.
The diaconate program, which started in Hawaii in 1978, is currently seeking applicants for its fourth formation class. A series of informational open houses have been held on all islands this past month and another is scheduled from 7-9 p.m., this Wednesday, Oct. 19 at St. Stephen’s Diocesan Center.
Three classes of permanent deacons have been ordained since the inception of the program here and 31 deacons now serve in various ministries throughout the diocese.

Air Supply concert to benefit project
Not since the Dominican Soeur Sourire, aka the Singing Nun, hit number one on the pop music charts in 1963 with “Dominique,” has there been such a convergence of Dominican Sisters and popular song.
The soft-rock duo Air Supply, purveyor of such lofty hits as “Lost In Love,” will perform Nov. 14 in the Blaisdell Arena as a benefit for the Dominican Sisters of Hawaii.
The Australian pair, Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, met (appropriately) while appearing together in Jesus Christ Superstar. The group hit its stride in the 1980s with such charttoppers as “All Out of Love,” “Here I Am,” “The One That You Love,” and “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” …
Proceeds for the concert will go to the God’s House of Aloha and Elder Care Center.
