Serra Club urges parishes to honor their priests on Priesthood Sunday
The Serra Club of Honolulu urges lay parish leaders to honor their parish priests on Sunday, Oct. 27, “Priesthood Sunday.”
According to Serra president Estrella Estillore, the day is set aside to reaffirm the central role of the priesthood in the life of the church.
“We hope every parish does something to express the appreciation of their faith community for the devoted priests who serve them,” she said. “A celebration is especially relevant in light of the small number of priests that serve our diocese.”
“Also, those contemplating a vocation will be encouraged by the esteem shown to our priests,” Estillore said. “This is an opportunity for each parish to reaffirm the priesthood as central to the life of our Church.”
The USA Council of Serra International is the nationwide sponsor for the event. It has created a special website, www.priestsunday.org, with suggestions for Priesthood Sunday liturgies and activities. The website also has reflections by priests on their vocations, downloadable graphics, guides and posters.
The last Sunday of October has been designated as Priesthood Sunday, but parishes may choose any day or occasion to celebrate the contribution of their priests.
Founded in 1970, the Serra Club of Honolulu is part of a worldwide Catholic organization of lay men and women dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and vowed religious life. For further information about Serra or Priesthood Sunday, contact Chuck Furr at 263-8670.
Former Newman pastor to lead Holy Land, Ignatian summer pilgrimages
Jesuit Father Russell Roide, the former pastor of the Newman Center at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, will be priest chaplain for two pilgrimages next summer, one to the Holy Land, the other to Loyola, Spain, in honor of its most famous son, St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits, the religious order of Pope Francis.
The Holy Land pilgrimage, June 8-17, bring the Scriptures to life with visits to the places where Jesus walked: Nazareth, Tiberias, the Sea of Galilee, the Mount of Beatitudes, Caesarea, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives and more.
Father Roide, now the director of adult spirituality at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, Calif., has been to the Holy Land four times and knows it well.
The second pilgrimage, “A Journey with St. Ignatius Loyola, The Pilgrim,” July 1-14, will visit Loyola, the saint’s birth place and place of his conversion, and all the important places in his life, including a visit to the home of St. Francis Xavier. Stops also include San Sebastian, Lerida, Montserrat and Barcelona.
Father Roide will take the pilgrims through the life of St. Ignatius, explaining the spirituality of the Jesuits and Pope Francis. Ignatian spirituality is a hallmark of Bellarmine College Preparatory and all Jesuit institutions.
For more information about the pilgrimages, go to www.pilgrimages.com/frroide. Father Roide suggests the “land only” price for both pilgrimages as you may want to use your miles or arrive earlier or stay in Europe for a while.
