Answering a special concern for a special kind of illness

Due to the efforts of one lay woman, on Sunday, Oct. 2, parishioners from around Oahu will have a chance to help 10,000 sick and suffering in Hawaii, perhaps even help someone in their own neighborhood.

Marie Soares, a parishioner from St. Anthony Church in Kailua, has distributed a petition to 31 Catholic churches on Oahu asking Congress and the president to become more aware of the problems of mental illness; problems that could begin to be addressed if enough money were appropriated for schizophrenia and neuroscience research.

From each parishioner she is asking only for their valid signature to be put on the petition that will be available after each Mass on Oct. 2.

Gunshots cause lockdown at St. Patrick School

“As soon as we heard the shots, we had a lockdown,” said St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Rose Miriam Schillinger, principal of St. Patrick School in Kaimuki, of the nearby shooting that rattled her 540 students and faculty on the morning of Sept. 15.

The commotion started with a minor collision between two motorists at the corner of 6th and Harding Avenues, which border the Ewa-makai corner of the school. Both vehicles pulled into the school’s employee parking lot near the cafeteria.

According to news reports, one of the motorists was Oliver Tela, whom the police officer on the scene discovered was a fugitive. Tela allegedly resisted arrest and, after the officer tried to subdue him with pepper spray, allegedly pulled out a realistic-looking pistol from his fanny pack. The officer reacted by firing three shots wounding the suspect.
