A hard choice to make, yet some judges will have to choose on September 14 the young lady who will be crowned Charity Queen of the Oahu Council of the Filipino Catholic Clubs. Candidates for the honor are shown above (left to right): Martha Cabasag, St. Joseph’s FCC, Waipahu; Salome Cabais, St. Anthony’s; Gloria Tapangco, Our Lady of Sorrows’ FCC, Wahiawa; Aletia Cabigas, Our Lady of the Mount’s FCC, Honolulu; Eileen Bunda, Sacred Heart Church’s FCC, Kawailoa. Missing from the picture is candidate Linda Dancel of St. Theresa’s FCC, Honolulu. Coronation will take place on November 8 at the annual convention of the Diocesan Congress of Filipino Catholic Clubs.

Mahalo for the past, aloha for the present, hope for the future

Last Saturday, the past, present and future of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Hawaii bloomed into a sweet and fragrant celebration.

Packing the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu, the parish where the first nine Sisters of St. Joseph arrived a half century ago, friends, former students, clergy and religious joined the 47 sisters now serving the church in the islands at the late morning 50th anniversary Mass celebrated by Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario. …

During the Mass, the flower-bedecked Maui-born Sr. Roselani Enomoto, C.S.J., was “affirmed” as newly elected vice-provincial superior and Sr. Patricia Ann Chang made her final profession of vows.

Chaminade dedicates new observatory

Chaminade University of Honolulu’s new E.L. Wiegand Observatory made its debut Aug. 26 – the same day Mars swings its closest to earth in 60,000 years.

After a private dedication ceremony and sunset Hawaiian blessing, university regents, faculty and invited students took the first celestial tour.

Located above Kieffer Hall overlooking Palolo Valley, the observatory will open the heavens to Chaminade astronomy students this fall. Chaminade offers both day and evening classes in astronomy, including an increasingly popular online class.

Certified student technicians will use the observatory’s telescope to create observation programs and collect astronomical data.
