Free conference will focus on end-of-life issues

08/16/2013 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

A free conference addressing the legal, medical, ethical and moral issues that come with end-of-life issues will be offered 7-9 p.m., Aug. 22, at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Pastoral Center in Pearl City.

The event “Who Will Decide for You at the End of Your Life?” is jointly sponsored by the Hawaii Family Forum, Hawaii Catholic Conference and the Diocesan Respect Life Office.

The presenters are attorney Scott Makuakane; Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, executive director of Hawaii Catholic Conference and the Diocesan Respect Life Office; and Eva Andrade, executive director of Hawaii Family Forum.

Makuakane, who has practiced estate planning law since 1983, will discuss advance health-care directives, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), durable powers of attorney and Hawaii State Law as it applies to end-of-life decisions.

Deacon Yoshimitsu and Andrade will explain end-of-life care, decision-making and directives through the lens of Catholic teaching.

Makuakane is the principal at Est8Planning Counsel LLLC, president of the Financial Planning Association of Hawaii, president of the Christian Legal Society of Hawaii and an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu at Koolau.

To attend the conference, RSVP to info@hawaiifamilyforum.org by Aug. 21, or online at www.hawaiifamilyforum.org.
