Darryl P. Wong of Honolulu was made a knight of the Order of Malta June 21 at the organization’s annual investiture at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles.

The Order of Malta, formally known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, is a lay religious order of the Catholic Church dating back over 900 years.

Wong is a member of the order’s Western Association, one of three in the U.S., which has a membership of approximately 800 knights, dames and chaplains living throughout the western half of the United States.

Members are committed to practicing their Catholic faith and serving the poor and sick. The order includes hundreds of auxiliary members — men, women and young adults — who share the order’s mission but do not make the formal commitments of knights, dames and chaplains.

Other members of the Order in Hawaii are Bishop Larry Silva, Thomas G. Cabrinha, John Henry Felix and James W. Wong.

Among other activities, the order in Hawaii provides volunteer and financial support to the Institute for Human Services, an agency working to prevent homelessness in Hawaii.
