Mondoy wins church tech award for catechist classes on Facebook

07/19/2013 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Jayne Mondoy, director of the diocesan Office of Religious Education, was awarded the Conference Theme Award at the Diocesan Information Systems Conference (DISC) June 21 in Dallas for her department’s program that offers faith formation classes to catechists online via Facebook.

Mondoy was one of six nominated for the honor which, following the conference’s theme, recognized “the innovative use of technology by any Catholic Ministry (parish, diocese, associated organization) to inform, collaborate and celebrate with their parishioners.”

The theme of the June 18-21 conference at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel was “Strengthening Catholic Ministries through Technology: Inform – Collaborate – Innovate – Celebrate.”

DISC is an organization for U.S. and Canadian dioceses that promotes the use of technology in the Catholic Church. The DISC awards honors dioceses for excellence in the application of technology. Other awards given were the Technology Evangelization Award and the Diocesan Achievement Award.

Mondoy was nominated by Diane Lamosao, financial and systems analysis manager for the diocesan Finance Office.

Lamosao cited Mondoy’s “innovative approach in evangelizing” by teaching courses to a closed Facebook group. Assignments are posted to the Facebook group and Facebook Forum is used for class discussions.

She described Mondoy’s program as an inexpensive way to provide faith formation in a flexible environment already familiar to many people that is not impeded by geographical distances.
