NEWS FROM PAGES PAST

50 years ago — July 19, 1963

For 44 days, from the end of June to the beginning of August in 1963, members of the Islands’ press community were involved in a strike against the Hawaii Newspaper Agency. No issues of the Hawaii Catholic Herald were printed during that time.

Big Island, diocese establish east Hawaii homeless shelter

Big Island Mayor Dante K. Carpenter announced July 3 that the County’s Office of Housing and Community Development, the East Hawaii Coalition for the Homeless and the Diocese of Honolulu have joined together to establish a homeless shelter in East Hawaii.

The site, jointly selected, is located in Hilo at 115 Kapiolani St., between Haili and Ponahawai streets. The property is about an acre in size and contains four single-family residences surrounded by a large yard with mature fruit trees.

“There has been a lot of attention given to the homeless by the national news media,” the mayor said, “but Big Island residents may not be aware that we have a real problem right here in Hawaii County.”

Marists end 59-year assignment to Kauai

After 59 years, the Marist Fathers are leaving Kauai. Their last day is officially July 31.

Father James Orsini is replacing Marist Father Bruce Lery as pastor of St. Catherine Parish, Kapaa and its two missions, St. William in Hanalei and St. Sylvester in Kilauea.

The order’s dwindling numbers is the cause of the departure …

Said Marist Father Dennis Steik, provincial of the Marist Atlanta Province of which Hawaii is a part, “With the smaller number of men, we are aligning ourselves geographically. That requires our ministry to be on the mainland.”

Since the order’s arrival on Kauai in 1944, more than 30 Marist priests and a handful of Marist brothers had been assigned to three of the island’s five parishes.
