Manaolana | Sidebar: June 21, 2013

Quote

“We are hoping for a little divine intervention to ensure the sun shines down on the resort for the duration on the summit.”

| Ferghal Purcell, general manager of the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland, which hosted world leaders June 17-18 for the Group of Eight summit. Ahead of the meeting, Purcell buried on the hotel grounds a replica of the 16th-century Infant of Prague statue, an Irish Catholic tradition said to seek God’s blessing of fine weather for special occasions. Saints under 35

Germaine Cousine was plagued with ill health from her birth in 1579 until she died at age 22. But her suffering was exacerbated by an external factor: the hatred of her stepmother, who severely abused Germaine as the girl’s father turned his head.

Germaine was banished to the family barn in Pibrac, France, where she tended the sheep. She developed her deep devotion to and love of God during her long days with the animals; soon she was going to daily Mass and sharing with others what little she had. Her pious and forgiving spirit eventually moved even her venomous stepmother, but it was too late — Germaine died in 1601 after a lifetime of pain and hardship.

St. Germaine is the patron saint for victims of child abuse. (www.catholic.org)
