Manaolana | Makana’s helpful hints: Love from a distance

06/21/2013 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Who remembers the Hawaiian Tel commercial featuring the song, “Far Too Wide”? Anyone who has spent time living on the Mainland can relate to the young man in the commercial making a “long distance” call home as the lyrics are sung, “I wish that there were some way to walk across the sea.”

Every year, thousands of our high school graduates experience this for the first time. Research has shown that between the ages of 18 and 24 is a crucial time for a person’s spiritual development. Thus, it’s important to make sure that we intentionally minister to this age group even when the ocean is “Far Too Wide.” Here are a few great tools to help our young adults grow spiritually wherever they go:

“The Newman Connection” — if you register yourself and say what college you will be at, the campus ministry/parish there will contact you and get you connected: www.newmanconnection.com

“Busted Halo” — a website full of young adult articles, blogs and videos on all things current in pop culture and how they relate to our Catholic faith: www.bustedhalo.com

“College Life” — the new Life Teen ministry specifically for college young adults, for info: kheller@lifeteen.com

Makana Aiona is the diocesan coordinator for Young Adult Ministry.
