A pilgrimage through Paia, Haiku, Kula and beyond

05/24/2013 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

A hundred parishioners of Christ the King Church in Kahului, Maui, embarked on a Year of Faith pilgrimage recently without ever leaving the Valley Isle.

They visited five Maui churches — St. Ann in Waihee, Holy Rosary in Paia, St. Rita in Haiku, Holy Ghost in Kula, and Queen of the Angels in Keokea. Many of the pilgrims had never seen some of these churches even though they have lived on Maui all their lives.

Father Adondee Arellano prepared the prayers said in each church. He expaliend at the beginning that pilgrimages were not merely sightseeing trips but a time for prayer, meditation, reflection and praising God in songs and Scripture reading.

Besides the prayers and songs, Father Pablo Bustamante offered a few spiritual thoughts and informational materials, and the pilgrims shared testimonials.

For lunch, pilgrims sat in groups of 10 to talk story and get to know each other.

Chaired by Lucy Peros, it was a day of fun, spiritual renewal and fellowship.
