The multi-level music department of St. John Vianney School in Kailua under the direction of Dana Arbaugh will present its spring concert, 6:30 p.m., May 10, in the parish church. The public is invited.
The concert will feature the school’s beginning band, beginning orchestra, concert band and concert orchestra performing works from around the world and well-known folk tunes. Student musicians in grades three through seven are writing the script for the event.
The evening will also include performances by a parent band and parent orchestra. Students in the beginning band and orchestra have been teaching their parents, aunties, uncles, family friends, teachers and school friends how to play an instrument. After a month’s worth of lessons from their children, each group will perform the unique piece they have learned.
Among the other highlights will be the debut of an original piece composed and performed by the student percussion ensemble — Thomas McCoy, Micah Griffin, Aidan Jones and Cole Jamilla; a distinctive fiddle tune by the concert orchestra; and the final number, an incredibly exciting work titled “Canto” featuring the two graduating eighth grade percussionists, Thomas and Micah.
The school is proud to have eight beginning band students performing in the Oahu Band Directors Association’s Beginning Honor Band, and three concert band students in the association’s Middle School Honor Band.
