Why did God create us?
God created us out of free and unselfish love. [Catechism of the Catholic Church 1-3]
At the Easter Vigil, we hear the creation story from Genesis chapter one. After each day of creation, “God saw how good it was.” And after six days of creating, God rested. He rested knowing that what he created was “very good.”
The creation story tells us a lot about who God is. God didn’t create the waters, the land, fish and the birds, because he was bored. He created because He loves. “God is love” (1 John 4:16b). The YOUCAT says that “out of the ‘surplus’ of his love he created us. He wanted to share his endless joy with us, who are creatures of his love.”
The creation story expresses God’s never-ending love for us. All of Scripture teaches us that God created man out of love and to love. However, God does not force this love upon us — it is our choice to accept and share it.
“The measure of love is to love without measure.” [St. Francis de Sales]
#YearofFaith Challenge: We are given a choice to freely accept God’s love. How will you choose?
