203 catechumens to be baptized in Isle parishes this Easter

02/15/2013 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Catholic churches across Hawaii will baptize 203 catechumens during the Easter Vigil liturgy on March 30 according to numbers supplied by the diocesan Office of Worship.

In anticipation of their baptisms, the catechumens, also called the “elect,” will be welcomed in four Rites of Election this weekend on Maui, Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island.

At each rite, those who have been preparing for baptism over the past year through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, or the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children, RCIC, will sign their names in the Book of the Elect, signifying their desire to be received into the church at Easter.

Here is the Rite of Election schedule:

  • Kauai: Feb. 17, 9:30 a.m., Immaculate Conception, Lihue
  • Maui: Feb. 17, 2 p.m., St. Theresa Church, Kihei
  • Big Island: Feb. 16, 5 p.m., St. Joseph Church, Hilo
  • Oahu: Feb. 17, 2 p.m., Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu

Bishop Larry Silva will preside at the Big Island and Oahu ceremonies.

Overall, the number of elect this year reflects an increase of 13 from last year’s total of 190.

The Office of Worship reports that 35 of Hawaii’s 66 parishes have catechumens this year. (It is possible that some parishes did not report their names to the office.) Other Hawaii communities baptizing new Catholics are two ethnic Catholic groups, Chaminade University and one military chapel.

In general, Central and Leeward Oahu parishes are baptizing the most catechumens. This year, St. Elizabeth in Aiea reports the highest number at 16.

In addition to the catechumens, others will be welcomed into “full communion” with the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil. These are people who are already baptized and who will receive one or both of the remaining sacraments of initiation — Confirmation or First Eucharist.

According to the Office of Worship, parishes reported a total of 151 who will be received into full communion this year.
