Diocese rejects $42 million offer for St. Augustine Church property

The Diocese of Honolulu on Jan. 28 rejected an offer from a foreign investor to buy the St. Augustine Church property in Waikiki after diocesan consultors told Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario the “difficulties” the deal would create would not be worth it.

“The advice I was getting from the (diocesan College of) Consultors was that there would be difficulties involved with the feelings of the people, a loss of credibility, and divisiveness (within the Church),” Bishop Ferrario told the Hawaii Catholic Herald this past Tuesday.

Red Mass speaker: Good works, not words, mark success in public service

At the diocese’s annual Red Mass, Jan. 16 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, attorney Randall W. Roth told the gathering of government, military and religious leaders that action is what counts in public service, not words.

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo presided at the yearly liturgy which appeals to the Holy Spirit for guidance for Hawaii’s public officials. The Mass corresponded with the opening of the state legislature the day before.

“Success in public service ultimately is not going to be judged by eloquent or even persuasive arguments, but by how we treat each other and especially how we treat the most poor and powerless among us,” Roth said.
